Suspend 40.0 grams in 1000 ml distilled water. Heat to boiling to dissolve the medium completely. Dispense as desired and sterilize by autoclaving at 15 lbs pressure (121°C) for 15 minutes.
Taurocholate broth selectively supports growth of gram-negative coliforms from water, milk and other similar food products. The selective action of this medium is attributed to crystal violet and sodium taurocholate which inhibits most species of gram-positive bacteria. Lactose is a fermentable carbohydrate. Neutral red is the indicator dye in the media. Lactose fermenters acquire pinkish red colour due to production of acid. Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic balance at the medium.

Reaction of 4.0% w/v aqueous solution is pH 7.4 ± 0.2 at 25°C.
Cultural characteristics observed after 18-48 hours at 35°C .
